Find hiking buddies in Austin
Austin has more trail than most people realize, a short drive or no drive at all from wherever you live. Hiking is also one of the easiest ways to get to know someone: you walk side by side, there's always something to talk about, and nobody has to be good at anything. nCommon helps you find people to go with.
Post the trail, pick the pace
Post "Greenbelt hike Saturday at 8, moderate pace, about two hours" and people nearby who like hiking see it. They ask to join, you say yes, and the chat opens to agree where to meet. Say whether it's a stroll or a workout so the right people come along.
Popular places to hike in and around Austin
- Barton Creek Greenbelt. Miles of trail through the hills, with several entrances across town.
- Mount Bonnell. A short climb to one of the best views of the Colorado River, good for sunset.
- River Place Nature Trail. Steep and stair-heavy, if you want a real workout.
- The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail around Lady Bird Lake: flat, central and easy to join from downtown.
- McKinney Falls State Park in southeast Austin, for trails and the falls (a state park entry fee applies).
Check trail conditions before you go: some trails close after heavy rain.
Hiking safely in the Texas heat
- Go early from late spring through early fall, and bring more water than you think you need.
- Meet at the trailhead or another public spot, and share your plan with someone who isn't coming.
- Know the way back. Download a map; phone signal can drop in the canyons.
How nCommon works
- Post a plan for now or later: what you're doing, roughly where, and whether you want one other person or a small group.
- Or join one. Plans near you show on a map and in a list. Ask to join, and the host says yes before the chat opens.
- Public places only. A plan shows a venue or an area, never anyone's home address.
- For friendship, not dating. It's about the thing you want to do and the people who want to do it too.
